For some reason, in the back of my mind, I'm under the impression that no one really read this blog anymore. But the webstats say different, so I'll keep writing if you'll keep reading. =)
Insanely Fun, Random Things That Kinda Have to Do With Me:
-I've stalled out on the 1979 O'Henry Award Winners. They don't call the late 1970s and early 1980s the "Me Generation" for nothing. Honestly! Blah, blah, blah.
-I saw "Phone Booth" starring the hateful Colin Farrell. The man exudes yuckfulness. Overall, the best thing about the movie was that it knew when to end. If only Panic Room came in under one hour and twenty minutes like this one. Morality plays don't need that much time to progress nicely. And did anyone notice that Forrest Whittaker is showing up in a lot of these?
-Megan has a funny advertisement for Soy Milk on her page. The link to the exact day wasn't working when I tried it, so visit her page soon. You'll know it when you see it. (And convince her to link to me again, even though I update once a year.) =)
-I've been writing a regular amount each day, during the week. Just like a regular job! And a lot of it is crap! Seriously...there's something to be said for momentum when you're writing fiction.
-I recieved an email from a writer named Carolyn See. In the past, she wrote a novel called "The Handyman." More recently, she's written a very useful book called "Making a Literary Life," which is full of advice to inexperieced writers. The best thing about the book is that it doesn't promise to make you a better writer (spurious at best), but it does offer lots of good, sitting-down-with-someone-who-knows-over-coffee-but-maybe-just-over-some-herbal-tea-because-all-this-advice-might-take-awhile-and-you-don't-want-to-get-jumpy kind of tips for the writing life. (Sorry, I haven't slept in awhile.) All I know is that I wrote her to thank her for a good book and I recieved a friendly message back. See, writers are nice!
-I spoke on the phone with an author who I respect highly. His name is David Leavitt and he's written multiple novels and short stories. I guess one could label him a "gay writer," but his work has a much broader literary scope. He is now a professor at the University of Florida. After speaking with him, I can safely say that UF is vying for the top of my list for MFA programs to apply to. I can end any sentence I want with a preposition, by the way. The Oxford Book of Style said so. That is the source where I got that information from. (okay, now that was truly horrible!)
